The Hajj Itinerary: What to Expect

Hajj is a 5-day ritual that takes place in Makkah, Mina, Muzdalifah, and Arafat. The full Hajj trip typically lasts 30–40 days, with time spent in Makkah before and after the rituals, and time in Madinah. The core 5 days are:

• Day 1 (8 Dhul Hijjah) — Tarwiyah Day: Pilgrims move from Makkah to Mina, 5 km away, and spend the day in prayer. Overnight in Mina in air-conditioned tents.
• Day 2 (9 Dhul Hijjah) — Arafah Day: Pilgrims move from Mina to Arafat, 14 km away, and spend the afternoon in prayer and reflection. This is the most important day of Hajj — the Prophet said "Hajj is Arafah". After sunset, pilgrims move to Muzdalifah, 9 km away, and spend the night under the open sky.
• Day 3 (10 Dhul Hijjah) — Eid al-Adha: Pilgrims return to Mina before dawn. The day includes the Rami (stoning of the largest Jamarat), the sacrifice of an animal, the shaving of the head (men) or trimming of hair (women), and the partial release from Ihram. Pilgrims then return to Makkah to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah.
