Ladies-Only Umrah Guide: Everything Women Need to Know

    Editorial

Performing Umrah is a deeply personal spiritual journey, and for Muslim women, the experience comes with its own set of practical, religious, and logistical considerations. From the latest Saudi policy changes on Mahram requirements to choosing the right Ihram for women, to navigating the Haram with respect and comfort, this guide covers everything a woman needs to know before booking her Umrah trip. As a Sialkot-based travel agency with extensive experience organising ladies-only Umrah groups, we have written this guide specifically for the Pakistani female pilgrim.

The 2024 Policy Change: Mahram No Longer Required

In a substantial policy shift, Saudi Arabia announced in late 2023 that women aged 18 and above can now perform Umrah without a Mahram (male relative), as part of an organised group. This change has transformed the Umrah experience for Pakistani women — particularly widows, divorcees, and women whose male relatives cannot travel. Kimi Travels operates dedicated ladies-only Umrah group departures with female coordinators, allowing women to perform Umrah with the support of a community without needing a male relative to accompany them.

For women travelling in our ladies-only groups, the female coordinator acts as the group leader and handles all logistics — visa processing, flight check-in, hotel check-in, transfers, and coordination with the Saudi authorities. The coordinator is experienced in the women-specific practicalities of Umrah and is available 24/7 throughout the trip.

    Ihram for Women

Unlike men, who wear the specific two-piece unstitched white Ihram, women simply wear their usual modest prayer dress — typically a long-sleeved abaya or loose-fitting dress that covers the entire body except the face and hands. The dress should be plain and unadorned. Many women prefer to wear white, though any colour is acceptable. The key requirements are modesty, simplicity, and that the dress is not form-fitting or transparent.

It is recommended to bring two sets of prayer dresses — one for the Ihram state and one for general wear after Umrah is complete. The Ihram dress should be comfortable for walking, as the Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) and Sa'i (walking between Safa and Marwah) involve substantial walking — typically 4–6 km in total.

Practical Tips for Women Performing Umrah

Footwear: Comfortable slip-on sandals or walking shoes are essential. Avoid new shoes — break them in before the trip. The marble floors of the Haram can be slippery, particularly after Wudu (ablution), so grip is important. Many women prefer lightweight trainers with grip soles.

Hijab and Niqab: The Hijab (head covering) is mandatory in the Haram. The Niqab (face covering) is optional but is worn by many Pakistani women. If you wear Niqab, be aware that Saudi immigration may ask you to briefly lift it for identity verification at the airport. A magnetic Niqab that can be lifted and replaced easily is practical.

Hair covering during Tawaf: The Hijab must be securely fastened during Tawaf, as the crowd can cause loose scarves to fall. Many women use a Hijab cap underneath to keep the scarf in place. Avoid long, flowing scarves that could trip other pilgrims.

Menstruation: Women who begin their menstrual cycle during Umrah should not perform Tawaf or Sa'i until the cycle is complete. The Umrah can be completed after the cycle ends. There is no sin in this — it is a natural occurrence and the rules accommodate it. Plan your travel dates with a buffer of 2–3 days if you anticipate your cycle.

Carry a small bag: A small crossbody bag or waist pouch for your phone, prayer beads, and a small Quran is useful. Avoid large handbags that can be cumbersome in the crowd. There are security checkpoints at the Haram entrances where bags are inspected.

Choosing the Right Time to Travel

For women, the best time to perform Umrah is outside the peak season (Ramadan and the school holidays). The cooler months from October to April offer the most comfortable weather — Makkah in summer routinely hits 45°C, which can be exhausting for women who are covering more of their bodies. The off-peak months also mean smaller crowds, which makes the Tawaf and Sa'i less physically demanding.

If you wish to perform Umrah during Ramadan — which carries additional spiritual reward — be prepared for very large crowds and significantly higher hotel rates. Ramadan Umrah packages book up 3–4 months in advance, so plan early.

    Standing with Palestine

At Kimi Travels, we believe travel should build bridges between people — never erase their histories or silence their struggles. We stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine and proudly serve Palestinian students, patients, and families travelling through Pakistan and the wider region. A portion of every booking we process is donated to verified humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza and the West Bank. Justice anywhere is justice everywhere. Our prayers on every Umrah journey include the safety and freedom of the people of Palestine — may the day come when Masjid Al-Aqsa is once again freely accessible to all pilgrims, and the women of Palestine can perform Umrah without restriction.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can a woman perform Umrah without a Mahram in 2026?
A: Yes, if she is aged 18 or above and travelling as part of an organised group with a female coordinator. Kimi Travels offers these group departures monthly.

Q: What should a woman wear during Ihram?
A: A modest, loose-fitting prayer dress that covers the entire body except the face and hands. Any colour is acceptable, though plain is preferred.

Q: Can women pray in the Mataf (the area around the Kaaba)?
A: Yes, but Saudi authorities have designated specific prayer areas for women to manage the crowd flow. Follow the signs and the guidance of your group coordinator.

Ready to plan your Umrah journey? Kimi Travels offers ladies-only Umrah packages with female coordinators throughout. Visit kimi.pk/packages for current pricing and departure dates.

"Umrah for a woman is not just a journey of the body. It is a conversation with the heart."
