Umrah for First-Timers: Everything You Need to Know

    Editorial

Performing Umrah for the first time is overwhelming — the rituals, the crowds, the logistics, the emotions. Every first-time pilgrim has dozens of questions: What do I wear? How do I perform Tawaf? Where do I stay? What should I pack? This guide answers every question a first-time Umrah pilgrim from Pakistan might have, based on years of organizing Umrah trips.

    What Is Umrah?

Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah — a voluntary act of worship that can be performed at any time of year (unlike Hajj, which has fixed dates). Umrah consists of four main rituals: Ihram (entering the sacred state), Tawaf (circling the Kaaba 7 times), Sa'i (walking between Safa and Marwah 7 times), and Halq/Taqsir (shaving or trimming the hair). The entire process takes 2-3 hours to complete.

    The 4 Steps of Umrah

    1. Ihram: Enter the sacred state at the Miqat (boundary before Makkah). Men wear two white unstitched sheets. Women wear modest prayer dress. Make the intention (niyyah) and recite the Talbiyah: "Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik..."
    2. Tawaf: Circle the Kaaba 7 times counter-clockwise, starting from the Black Stone corner. Each circuit is one Tawaf. Takes 45-90 minutes depending on crowd. Men run during the first 3 circuits (sunnah).
    3. Sa'i: Walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah 7 times (3.5 km total). This commemorates Hajar's search for water for Prophet Ismail. The route is now an air-conditioned corridor inside the Haram.
    4. Halq/Taqsir: Men shave their head (halq) or trim the hair (taqsir). Women trim a fingertip-length of hair. This completes the Umrah and releases you from Ihram.
