ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 Pakistan — How I Convinced My Friend Not to Buy a 300K PKR Laptop

    Editorial

My friend Ahmed is a graphic designer in Sialkot. He runs a small studio that does logo design, social media graphics, and photo retouching for local businesses. He had been saving for 8 months to buy a new laptop. His budget was 300,000 PKR. He wanted a Dell XPS 15 because he heard it has a good display. He was about to pull the trigger when I showed him the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 at 175,000 PKR.

What happened next is why I am writing this blog.

The Dell XPS 15 at 300K vs ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 at 175K

Ahmed had his eye on a Dell XPS 15 with a Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and a Full HD IPS display. Price: 295,000 PKR after taxes. The display is good — 100 percent sRGB, 500 nits brightness. But it is an IPS panel, not OLED. And the GPU is integrated Intel Iris Xe — no dedicated professional GPU.

I put the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 next to the XPS 15 spec sheet and asked him to compare:

    • Processor: Xeon E-2276M (6-core, 12-thread, ECC) vs Core i7-12700H (14-core, 20-thread). The Core i7 has more cores on paper, but the Xeon does not throttle under sustained load.
    • GPU: Quadro T2000 4GB (ISV-certified) vs Intel Iris Xe (integrated). No comparison for professional work.
    • Display: 4K OLED touchscreen (100 percent DCI-P3, Dolby Vision, Pantone, pen) vs Full HD IPS (100 percent sRGB). The OLED is in a completely different league.
    • RAM: 16GB DDR4 with one free slot (up to 64GB) vs 16GB DDR5 soldered (no upgrade). The ThinkPad's expandability is a massive advantage.
    • Storage: 512GB NVMe with one free M.2 slot vs 512GB NVMe with no free slot. Again, expandability matters.
    • Build: Carbon fiber MIL-SPEC vs aluminum. Both are good, but the ThinkPad is MIL-SPEC tested.
    • Warranty: Premier Support vs standard Dell warranty. Premier Support is faster.

The Display Comparison That Changed His Mind

I showed Ahmed the OLED display on the ThinkPad. He stared at it. Then he looked at his phone. Then back at the laptop. He said: "This is what my clients' screens look like." He had been editing photos on a 45 percent NTSC panel for years, delivering work that looked different on every screen. The OLED showed him what his photos actually looked like.

That moment — seeing accurate colors for the first time — is what convinced him. Not the Xeon. Not the Quadro. The OLED display. Because as a graphic designer, the display is his most important tool. A faster processor saves minutes. A better display changes everything.

    The Price Difference

Ahmed was about to spend 295,000 PKR on the Dell XPS 15. The ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 costs 175,000 PKR. That is a difference of 120,000 PKR. For less money, he gets a better display (OLED vs IPS), a professional GPU (Quadro vs integrated), expandable RAM (two slots vs soldered), expandable storage (two M.2 slots vs one), and Premier Support.

The only thing the Dell has that the ThinkPad does not is a newer processor generation. But the Xeon's sustained performance, ECC memory, and non-throttling behavior more than make up for the generational difference — especially for professional work.

What Ahmed Did with the Saved Money

Ahmed bought the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 for 175,000 PKR. With the 120,000 PKR he saved compared to the Dell, he added 32GB of RAM (4,000 PKR), a 1TB NVMe SSD (8,000 PKR), and used the remaining 108,000 PKR to upgrade his studio equipment. He now has a workstation that outperforms the Dell XPS 15 in every category that matters for his work — and he has money left over.

This is not a hypothetical scenario. This is what happened last month. Ahmed is now delivering work faster, with better color accuracy, and has not had a single GPU crash since switching from his old consumer laptop.
