ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 Pakistan — Expandable RAM and Storage Is Why This Laptop Saves You Money

    Editorial

There is one feature on the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 that nobody talks about in Pakistan, but it is the single biggest money-saver on this machine. Two RAM slots. Two M.2 SSD slots. One of each is occupied. The other of each is empty and waiting for you. This sounds boring. It is not. It is the difference between buying one laptop and buying four.

The Soldered RAM Problem in Pakistan

Walk into any laptop shop in Pakistan and look at the laptops between 100,000 and 200,000 PKR. HP Pavilion. Dell Inspiron. Lenovo IdeaPad. Asus Vivobook. Every single one of them has soldered RAM. The RAM chips are physically attached to the motherboard. You cannot remove them. You cannot upgrade them. If you buy 16GB today and need 32GB next year, your only option is to buy a new laptop.

This is not an accident. Laptop manufacturers solder RAM because it is cheaper to manufacture and it forces you to buy a new machine when you need more. It is planned obsolescence. And in Pakistan, where laptops are expensive and incomes are limited, this is devastating. You spend 150,000 PKR on a laptop, and 2 years later you need more RAM but you cannot upgrade — so you spend another 150,000 PKR on a new machine.

The ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 Has Two RAM Slots

The ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 has two SO-DIMM slots. Slot one comes with 16GB DDR4 RAM. Slot two is completely empty. This means:

    • Today: 16GB RAM is enough for most work.
    • Next year: Add a 16GB stick for 32GB total. Cost: about 4,000 PKR.
    • In 3 years: Replace both sticks with 32GB each for 64GB total. Cost: about 12,000 PKR.
    • In 5 years: 64GB is still more than enough for any professional workload.

You never need to buy a new laptop because you need more RAM. You spend 4,000-12,000 PKR instead of 150,000 PKR. That is the difference.

Two M.2 SSD Slots — Same Story

The ThinkPad also has two M.2 NVMe SSD slots. Slot one comes with a 512GB NVMe SSD. Slot two is empty. This means:

    • Today: 512GB is enough for most work.
    • Next year: Add a 1TB NVMe SSD in the empty slot. Cost: about 8,000 PKR. Total storage: 1.5TB.
    • In 3 years: Add a 2TB SSD. Cost: about 15,000 PKR. Total: 2.5TB.

You add storage without removing your existing drive. Your data stays where it is. Your OS stays on the original drive. You just get more space.

On a consumer laptop with a single SSD slot, you would need to remove the existing drive, clone it to the new drive, and reinstall everything. Or buy an external drive and deal with slower speeds. The ThinkPad's second M.2 slot eliminates all of that.

    The 10-Year Math

Here is the real money calculation. Over 10 years, a consumer laptop user in Pakistan typically does this:

    • Buy laptop 1: 150,000 PKR (16GB soldered, 512GB single SSD)
    • Need more RAM after 2 years — cannot upgrade. Buy laptop 2: 180,000 PKR (inflation)
    • Need more RAM after 4 years — cannot upgrade. Buy laptop 3: 220,000 PKR (more inflation)
    • Total over 10 years: 550,000 PKR. Still stuck with soldered RAM.

The ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 user does this:

    • Buy ThinkPad: 175,000 PKR (16GB in slot 1, 512GB in slot 1)
    • Add 16GB RAM after 2 years: 4,000 PKR (now 32GB)
    • Add 1TB SSD after 3 years: 8,000 PKR (now 1.5TB)
    • Replace battery after 5 years: 8,000 PKR
    • Upgrade to 64GB RAM after 7 years: 12,000 PKR
    • Total over 10 years: 207,000 PKR. Same machine. 64GB RAM. 1.5TB storage.

You save 343,000 PKR over 10 years. And you have a better machine the entire time.
