The Best Luxury & Boutique Hotels in Skardu and Hunza

    Editorial

Northern Pakistan is no longer the rough-and-ready destination it was a decade ago. The hotel infrastructure in Skardu and Hunza has matured to the point where travellers can experience genuine luxury — comfortable beds, hot showers, reliable electricity, and food that goes beyond the standard daal-roti — without sacrificing the alpine authenticity that draws people to the mountains in the first place. This guide reviews the seven properties we send our clients to most often, with honest assessments of what each does well and where each falls short. All seven are properties we book directly and visit regularly.

    1. Serena Shigar Fort — Shigar Valley, near Skardu

The Serena Shigar Fort is the flagship heritage property of northern Pakistan. A 17th-century palace of the Raja of Shigar, beautifully restored by the Aga Khan Cultural Service between 1999 and 2005, the fort is now a 14-room Serena hotel with original woodwork, traditional Balti furnishings, and an orchard garden that blooms with apricot and cherry trees in spring. The rooms are genuinely atmospheric — wooden balconies, carved pillars, and views of the surrounding peaks. The on-site restaurant serves excellent Balti and Pakistani cuisine. Service is professional and warm. This is the property we recommend most often for first-time visitors to Skardu.

Best for: Couples, families, heritage travellers. Standout: The orchard garden at sunset. Watch out for: Limited mobile signal in some rooms; the Wi-Fi is slow but functional.

    2. Serena Khaplu Palace — Khaplu, near Skardu

The sister property to Shigar Fort, the Serena Khaplu Palace is a 19th-century palace of the Raja of Khaplu, restored by the same Aga Khan team and opened as a hotel in 2013. The setting is even more spectacular than Shigar — perched above the Shyok River with views of the Masherbrum peaks. The 16 rooms and suites are beautifully appointed, the restaurant is excellent, and the staff are genuine local Balti people with deep knowledge of the region. Khaplu itself is quieter than Skardu town and a good base for the Machlu Valley and the Saltoro Valley.

Best for: Couples, photographers, travellers seeking quiet. Standout: The view of Masherbrum from the rooftop terrace. Watch out for: 2.5-hour drive from Skardu airport — not ideal for one-night stays.

    3. Shangrila Resort — Upper Kachura Lake, Skardu

The Shangrila Resort is the most iconic hotel in northern Pakistan — its Chinese-style red pavilion set against the turquoise waters of Upper Kachura Lake is one of the most photographed buildings in the country. The resort has 60 rooms across the main building and a series of Swiss-style chalets. The standard rooms are comfortable but tired; the chalets are newer and more atmospheric. The lake itself is the centerpiece — paddle boats, a short hike around the shore, and a restaurant perched over the water. Shangrila is excellent for families with children but can be crowded in peak season.

Best for: Families with children, first-time visitors. Standout: The lake at sunrise. Watch out for: Crowded in July and August; the standard rooms need renovation.

    4. Luxus Hunza — Karimabad, Hunza Valley

Luxus Hunza is the most genuinely modern luxury hotel in Karimabad. Opened in 2019, the property has 40 rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling windows framing Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar. The design is contemporary minimalist with warm wood accents — a clear departure from the traditional Balti aesthetic of the Serena properties. The restaurant is genuinely good (the breakfast spread is the best in Karimabad), the spa offers genuine treatments (not just token massages), and the rooftop infinity pool is one of the most photogenic in Pakistan. Service is professional and English-speaking.

Best for: Couples, design-conscious travellers, business travellers. Standout: The rooftop pool at sunset. Watch out for: Higher price point than other Karimabad options.

    5. Eagle's Nest — Duikar, above Karimabad

Eagle's Nest is a boutique property perched on the hilltop village of Duikar, a 45-minute hike (or 15-minute 4x4 drive) above Karimabad. The setting is unbeatable — at 3,000 m, the hotel has the highest uninterrupted sunset view in the Hunza Valley, with 11 peaks above 7,000 m visible from the rooftop terrace. The 14 rooms are simple but comfortable, with shared balconies looking out over the valley. The food is home-cooked Hunza cuisine — walnut bread, chapshuro, apricot soup. This is the property to book for the sunset photography of your trip.

Best for: Photographers, couples, travellers seeking quiet. Standout: The sunset view from the rooftop. Watch out for: The hike up from Karimabad is steep; pack a torch for the walk back from dinner.

    6. Hunza Serena Inn — Karimabad, Hunza Valley

The Hunza Serena Inn is the older Serena property in Karimabad, set in a beautiful garden below the Baltit Fort. The 25 rooms are traditional in style — wood-paneled walls, local textiles, comfortable beds. The gardens are the standout feature — apple and apricot trees, a small stream, and a traditional Hunza seating area where guests can take tea in the afternoon. The restaurant serves excellent Hunza and Pakistani cuisine. The property is showing its age in places but the service and the gardens more than compensate.

Best for: Families, heritage travellers, garden lovers. Standout: The garden at apricot-blossom time in April. Watch out for: Some rooms face the access road and can be noisy.

    7. Darbar Hotel — Passu, upper Hunza

The Darbar Hotel in Passu is the best option for travellers exploring upper Hunza and the Khunjerab Pass. The property is simple — 16 rooms in a two-storey building — but the location is unbeatable, with views of the Passu Cathedral Cones from every room. The food is hearty home-cooked Pakistani fare. The owner is a local Wakhi man with deep knowledge of the upper Hunza region. This is not a luxury property but it is the best option in Passu and we book it regularly for our upper Hunza itineraries.

Best for: Travellers focusing on upper Hunza and the Khunjerab Pass. Standout: The view of the Passu Cathedral Cones at sunset. Watch out for: Basic amenities — this is genuine mountain hospitality, not a luxury hotel.
